Our goal is to highlight the dedicated professionals who have “stay-versified” their careers, moving from clinical practice into unique roles that support the veterinary profession in impactful ways.
In this session, we are excited to feature Emma Cathcart, Russell Roan, and Catherine Oxtoby as they share their journeys from clinical practice to leadership roles in patient safety.

Emma Cathcart is a dedicated veterinary surgeon with a deep passion for patient safety and human factors.
As a reflective practitioner, she champions quality and continuous improvement.
Emma excels as an educator, creating impactful learning experiences. She holds a MSc in Patient Safety and clinical Human Factors, actively integrating these principles into veterinary curriculums and conducting pivotal research.
Emma values curiosity, creativity, respect, and work-life balance, making her a valuable, collaborative team member.
Russell is a veterinary surgeon with experience in the practicing and industry side of the profession.
Having worked in mixed practice and in small animal practice, he moved into the pharmaceutical industry supporting the profession with product use advice in many areas including cardiology and seizure management.
Experience in senior roles in Regulatory Affairs and Pharmacovigilance as well as practical experience is now being expanded with work as the VetSafe Manager, developing knowledge in the arena of patient safety and quality improvement for the veterinary profession.
Catherine Oxtoby, a Bristol Vet School alumna, has a rich background in equine and small animal practice.
With a PhD from the University of Nottingham in Patient Safety in Veterinary Practice, she expertly blends human factors and systems perspectives to enhance veterinary safety.
At Veterinary Defence Society as Head of Underwriting and Pricing, Catherine leads the development of innovative safety systems like VetSafe and drives research in human factors and patient safety within the veterinary profession.
