Interview the Team - Veterinary Professional Preceptor roles at Harper & Keele Vet School

It’s time for an update and adding new Preceptors to the team!

You may remember from 2023 that VSGD worked with Mike Cathcart and the team at Harper & Keele to build the job spec and recruit for the Preceptor roles. We ran a series of events and had great engagement from the community about this role, unique as it was at the time.

What’s the state of play after being in the role for 6 months? What’s the impact and what opportunities are there for new Preceptors? It’s an ideal first job in academia for vets and vet nurses with a focus on the coaching, development and employability of the students.

The conversation covered how the team has formed and performed over the last six months, what’s been learned in implementing the Preceptor concept, both by the University and the students.

Joke Maes

After graduating in Ghent (Belgium), Joke moved to the UK in 1998. She enjoyed working in mixed and later small animal practice. Joke took several career breaks to care for her family and pursued different career paths. She returned to Veterinary Medicine and worked in a rural Small Animal Practice for 10 years before taking on the Role of Preceptor at HKVS. An interest in personal wellbeing and human factors encouraged her to find a position where these values are at the core of every working day.

Hannah Sampson

Hannah graduated as a vet from the RVC in 2001 and then worked in practice until 2023. For 16 years Hannah was a partner in an independent mixed practice and part of her role involved team development and training. This sparked an interest in interpersonal dynamics and wellbeing, motivating her to pursue a psychology MSc which she completed in 2023. She works part-time in the Preceptor role, alongside locum work, caring commitments and volunteering.

Hannah Greaves

After starting her first job in practice at the age of 16, Hannah continued to develop her skills and experience in several small animal and equine practices.

After 8 years veterinary nursing Hannah followed her passion for training student nurses and started a role teaching. Since then, Hannah has spent the past 8 years teaching, assessing, quality-assuring the veterinary nursing dip and BSc (Hons), and supporting students in the workplace.

Having worked in many roles her main passion has been supporting students 1:1, Hannah finds it very rewarding seeing each student develop their skills so they can achieve their goals. Hannah was delighted to start the role as a Veterinary Professional Preceptor to support our future Vets.

Lorien Waterer

Lorien’s had a diverse 12-year career as an omnicompetent GP Vet across the species and loves being a Vet!

Her curiosity of the ‘person behind the Vet’ led to further studies to become a Personal Performance Coach, NLP Practitioner, and DISC personality profiler. Integrating all these workplace experiences, she’s now helping pave a sustainable and essential team role in Veterinary Education to support the Vet students of today to be the Vets of our profession’s future.
