The University of Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine, established in 2014, is recognised for its innovative distributed model of clinical education, which combines university-based teaching with extensive training through partner veterinary practices.

Rather than relying on a university-owned teaching hospital, Surrey partners with a network of veterinary practices and clinical associates to provide students with extensive real-world clinical training.

University of Surrey

We have a full time position available for a qualified veterinary surgeon who has experience in production animals to join our School as a Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Practice (LVCP), delivering innovative veterinary education. This is a great opportunity to train and influence the vets of the future and comes with a great benefits package including a generous salary with an additional 10% uplift for MRCVS/FRCVS, 37 days holiday PLUS bank holidays, and an industry leading pension. This is a full time role, working 5 days per week. The successful candidate will be enrolled in a post graduate certificate in education.

About the role

LVCPs act as clinical and personal tutors to our final year students, supporting their learning and facilitating their transition to new graduates, whilst also supporting practice-based trained preceptors in the delivery of our distributed model of clinical education.

The distributed model means that you will work to support our students on their rotations at practices across the UK. While students are on placement you will spend a significant amount of time travelling to partner practices to deliver in person support to our students along with time in Guildford to teach students and support examinations.

Head of Department or Faculty

This position would suit someone with experience in production animal practice, but additional experience working with other species would be advantageous. We are looking for someone with an intuitive passion for teaching, but prior academic experience is not a prerequisite.

We are happy to consider candidates considering a career change into academia.

You will have a solid grounding in essential veterinary skills and a pragmatic attitude, able to think on your feet and adapt to the requirements of the role.

Due to the nature of the role and the distribution of our partner network, this post will require a significant amount of travel, and as such we will consider applicants based in all locations throughout the country.

Working patterns

There are no fixed daily or weekly working patterns. Academics are given the flexibility to manage their time and workload in response to the demands of the role and the academic calendar. For example, teaching commitments may be concentrated on particular days of the week, while assessment and marking responsibilities may be more prominent at certain times of the year. This creates a varied, dynamic role with considerable autonomy and flexibility.

Working location: Home-based with significant travel

During term time, students undertake placements in four-week blocks.

During the first two weeks of each rotation, university academics visit partner practices to support student learning and assessment. \

Depending on your home location and the practices for which you have responsibility, this may involve extended travel days or occasional overnight stays.

However, we would not expect academics to be away from home for more than two nights per month.

This will be an in-person interview at the University of Surrey.

Candidates will typically be asked to deliver a five-minute presentation on a predetermined topic, followed by a structured interview with a panel. The interview will also provide an opportunity for candidates to learn more about the role and ask any questions they may have.

We are committed to supporting a healthy work–life balance by offering flexible working arrangements wherever possible within the needs of the role. Staff benefit from a generous annual leave package, including six weeks of holiday, bank holidays, and University closure days, providing a total of approximately nine weeks of leave each year.

This flexibility, combined with substantial time off, helps colleagues balance their professional responsibilities with their personal commitments and wellbeing.

The University of Surrey offers an attractive benefits package, including:

  • Membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS)
  • Generous annual leave and University closure days
  • Flexible and blended working arrangements
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Sabbatical leave
  • Family-friendly policies
  • Wellbeing support
  • Discounted Surrey Sports Park membership
  • Access to childcare and travel assistance schemes

Closing date: 23:59 hours BST on Friday 24 July 2026

Informal enquiries are invited and should be directed to Matt Sanford (m.sanford@surrey.ac.uk)
