The School of Veterinary Science sits in the Institute of Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The Department of Small Animal Clinical Science is the organisational unit for these posts.

We invite applications for the post of Lecturer in Veterinary Professional Skills (Teaching & Scholarship) in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, with Teaching and Scholarship responsibilities in the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, School of Veterinary Science. 

The post is available from 1st September 2025.

 It is expected that teaching will take 70% of the postholder’s time. 

This role will contribute to teaching in professional skills. Teaching will involve provision of pastoral care, preparation for and delivery of lectures and practical classes, running tutorials, setting and marking of assessments and supervision of student research projects. 

Given the importance of teaching, the post holder will be expected to obtain a teaching qualification through the university, if they do not have one already. 

Staff are also obliged to take part in Peer Observation of Teaching and participate in training courses offered by the University to support development of their teaching practice. 

It is expected that the remaining time will be allocated to administration and research in support of teaching. 

Research areas include a wide portfolio of disciplines within the Department of Veterinary Anatomy Physiology and Pathology (VAPP) including pedagogical research in veterinary education. 

This post will be based mainly in our Liverpool campus with some time spent at our Leahurst campus and sits in VAPP. 

The Northwest of England offers a wonderful living environment with economic housing, miles of coastline, North Wales and the Lake District within easy reach (1-2hour drive). 

Leahurst Campus is located within greenbelt in southwest Wirral, approximately 15 miles from Liverpool. 

Liverpool, a recently regenerated city and provides a wealth of cultural attractions. Manchester is 40 miles away and London 200 miles (2.5 hours by train).

Experience 

Essential 
1. Teaching experience. 
2. Experience of working in a veterinary practice setting. 

Desirable 
1. Teaching in a higher education setting. 
2. Experience teaching professional and/or clinical skills. 
3. Experience in developing learning resources for undergraduate students. 
4. Excellent student feedback. 


Education, qualifications and training 
Essential 
1. Veterinary Science Degree. 
2. MRCVS (or eligible for registration without the requirement to sit the membership examination).

Desirable 
1. Teaching qualification. 
2. Research Qualification (PhD or Mphil). 
3. Education-related CPD and/or CPD related to professional and/or clinical skills education.

2. Knowledge of RCVS day one competences. 
3. Ability to manage workload and associated administrative responsibilities. 

Desirable

2. Ability to carry out independent research. 
3. Ability to use digital technologies to enhance student learning.

This role sits within a team of twelve academic members of staff who teach preclinical sciences and are based on the Liverpool campus. 

Professional skills is largely taught by three academic staff and will include some teaching at Leahurst. 

  • You will be required to deliver didactic lectures, small group teaching, and associated practical and problem-based learning sessions. 
  • You will contribute to core School activities such as admissions and student support. 
  • You will be expected to contribute to the organisation and delivery of the assessment process. 
  • You will also participate in knowledge exchange and postgraduate training.
