The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Lancashire is an international, research-active institution, the first facility of its kind to open in the county. 

You will be joining a talented team who are leading the way in modern learning today, committed to widening access and participation in veterinary education. 

The School is developing further research activities and postgraduate teaching opportunities, along with bespoke teaching and research environments. Collaboration with internal and external research networks is encouraged.

You will contribute to the course development, delivery and management of undergraduate and postgraduate education for students enrolled in the School of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on the topic of animal behaviour, welfare & ethics. 

You will work closely with the School of Veterinary Medicine’s academic and digital development team to create innovative and accessible learning provision to UG and PG learners, supervise and support undergraduate and postgraduate research, and contribute to the wider School and University activities.

  1. Promote the advancement of learning and teaching, student experience and success, quality assurance and enhancement, including monitoring and evaluation of outcomes, to ensure high standards are maintained, and requirements of all relevant regulatory bodies are met. 
  2. Design and develop effective and inclusive learning materials and assessments to align with programme and module descriptors. 
  3. Contribute to the School of Veterinary Medicine’s academic and research objectives through scholarly activities, knowledge transfer and research outputs. 
  4. Provide academic and pastoral support to undergraduate and postgraduate students. 
  5. Teach to a high-quality standard using engaging and inclusive teaching, learning and assessment methods and technologies, including via VLE and other digital media. 
  6. Contribute to the assessment process for students, including enhancement, setting, invigilation, marking and moderation of the student work, individually or collectively as part of a programme team in accordance with University and School quality assurance procedures. 
  7. Provide high-quality, timely formative and summative feedback to students. 
  8. Ensure that learning content is appropriate, up to date and comprehensive to enable successful achievement of agreed learning outcomes.
  9. To contribute to the further development of the School of Veterinary Medicine course provision as well as undertaking strategic development responsibilities relating to behaviour, welfare and ethics in veterinary education 
  10. To undertake administrative duties relevant to module leadership (administer course registers, assessment records, learning programmes and other records) and Personal Tutoring, including supporting student retention and engagement, identifying and assisting struggling students. 
  11. To support processes to enhance the student voice and integrate student wellbeing into course delivery. 
  12. Engage with the recruitment of students onto courses and provide appropriate advice on progression and career opportunities. 
  13. To participate in the student admission process: open days; recruitment; clearing; and selection events for all campus sites. 
  14. Carry out other duties commensurate with the level of the post as outlined by the Head of School. 
  15. With regard to the nature of your role and its impact upon our students, make an active contribution to and support the improvement of the student experience. 
  16. Undertake other relevant duties and responsibilities appropriate to the grade of the post as outlined by the Head of School.

The successful candidate will have knowledge and practical skills in Animal Sciences including behaviour, welfare and ethics. They must hold at least a 2:1 (Hons) degree or equivalent in veterinary medicine, animal science or another relevant discipline as well as a relevant Level 7 qualification or significant professional specialisation. You should be flexible and innovative in your teaching approach, prepared to teach across a variety of degrees within the school and be committed to widening participation in education and animal welfare in practice.

It would be beneficial to have teaching and assessment experience at Levels 4-7 and an ability to engage in research activity relevant to your field of expertise. Knowledge of research design, statistical analysis (particularly in R Studio) and practical experience of evidence-based companion animal handling is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (Essential) 

  • A sound knowledge and practical experience of Animal and/or Veterinary Sciences including behaviour, welfare and ethics (Application/Interview) 
  • Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in veterinary medicine, animal science or another relevant discipline (Application). 
  • A relevant Master's qualification or equivalent professional specialisation (Application) 
  • Higher education teaching qualification or professional (e.g. PGCHE, FHEA or equivalent), or a commitment to complete within one year of appointment (Application). 
  • Flexible, creative, and innovative approach to teaching and learning (Application/Interview).
  • Enthusiasm for widening participation and supporting under-represented groups into Higher education (Application/Interview). 
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team (Application/Interview). 
  • IT literate with knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Padlet and quiz software etc. (Application/Interview). 
  • Commitment to animal welfare in practice and understanding of animal ethics (Application/ Interview). 
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills (Application/Interview). 
  • Able to support an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected and able to participate, while upholding lawful freedom of speech (Interview).

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (Desirable) 

  • Knowledge of research design, statistical analysis and practical experience in evidence-based companion animal handling (Application/Interview). 
  • Experience of teaching and assessment at Levels 4-7 including experience of face-to-face and virtual learning (Application/interview). 
  • Research or evidence-informed practical experience relating to animal welfare, applied animal ethics and/or animal behaviour (Application/Interview). 
  • Ability to undertake research/knowledge transfer (Application/Interview). 
  • Experience of using R-Studio for statistical analysis (Application). 
  • Publications and/or conference presentation (Application). 
  • PhD or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant area (Application). 
  • Experience of curriculum development, constructive alignment and assessment techniques (Application/Interview).
