The School will provide state-of-the-art, sector leading purpose-built training amenities, including high-specification anatomical skills laboratories, simulated operating theatres, diagnostic suites and pharmacies, microscopy labs and immersive teaching facilities to enhance the learning for students studying a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the veterinary and animal sciences. The school focus will be on producing much-needed industry-ready graduates for our region and beyond.

The School of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Veterinary Lecturer with expertise in Clinical Communication and Professional Skills to join our growing academic team. You will play a key role in delivering an outstanding student experience through high-quality teaching, curriculum development and student support across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, while contributing to the School's research, scholarship and external engagement activities.

You will have experience in veterinary clinical communication and teaching, alongside an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a veterinary or other relevant discipline, and a relevant Masters qualification. Registration with the RCVS would be advantageous.

You will be an engaging and inclusive educator with strong communication and problem-solving skills, the ability to develop innovative learning experiences, and enthusiasm for supporting student success, research and the continued development of veterinary education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (Essential)

  • Sound knowledge and practical experience of veterinary sciences including Clinical Communication skills (Application/Interview). 
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of people in professional contexts and adapting communication strategies accordingly (Application/Interview). 
  • Experience of teaching Veterinary Clinical and Communication (Application/Interview). 
  • Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a veterinary or other relevant discipline (Application). 
  • Higher education teaching qualification (e.g. PGCHE, FHEA or equivalent), or a commitment to complete within one year of appointment (Application). 
  • A relevant Masters qualification or equivalent professional, specialist experience (Application).
  • Flexible, creative, and innovative approach to teaching and learning including experience of face-to-face and virtual learning environments (Application/Interview). 
  • Ability to undertake research/knowledge transfer (Application/ Interview). 
  • Enthusiasm for widening participation and supporting under-represented groups into higher education (Application/Interview). Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team (Application/ Interview). 
  • IT literate with knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Padlet and quiz software etc. (Application/Interview). 
  • Commitment to animal welfare in practice and understanding of animal ethics (Application/Interview). 
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills (Application/ Interview). 
  • An understanding of and demonstrable commitment to the University’s Values as a framework for decisions, actions and behaviours (Interview).

  • Experience of teaching and assessment at Levels 4-7 (Application/Interview).

  • Publications, conference presentation (Application). 
  • PhD in a relevant area (Application).

  • An ability to contribute to the enhancement of research within the School (Application/Interview).
  1. Promote the advancement of learning and teaching, student experience and success, quality assurance and enhancement, including monitoring and evaluation of outcomes, to ensure high standards are maintained and requirements of all relevant regulatory bodies are met. 
  2. Design and develop effective and inclusive learning materials and assessments to align with programme and module descriptors. 
  3. Contribute the School of Veterinary Medicine’ academic and research objectives through scholarly activities, knowledge transfer and research outputs. 
  4. Provide academic and pastoral support to undergraduate and postgraduate students 
  5. Teach to a high quality standard using engaging and inclusive teaching, learning and assessment methods and technologies, including via VLE and other digital media. 
  6. Contribute to the assessment process for students including enhancement, setting, invigilation, marking and moderation of the student work, individually or collectively as part of a programme team in accordance with University and School quality assurance procedures. 
  7. Provide high quality, timely, formative and summative feedback to students. 
  8. Ensure that learning content is appropriate, up to date and comprehensive to enable successful achievement of agreed learning outcomes. 
  9. To contribute to the further development of the School of Veterinary Medicine course provision as well as undertaking strategic development responsibilities relating to Clinical Communication and professional skills in veterinary education.
  10. To undertake administrative duties relevant to module leadership (administer course registers, assessment records, learning programmes and other records) and Personal Tutoring including supporting student retention, and engagement, identifying and assisting struggling students. 
  11. To support processes to enhance the student voice and integrate student wellbeing into course delivery. 
  12. Engage with the recruitment of students onto courses and provide appropriate advice on progression and career opportunities. To participate in the student admission process: open days; recruitment; clearing; and selection events for all campus sites. 
  13. Contribute to development and delivery of CPD, PPD or PG degree courses. 
  14. To develop and consolidate contacts with industry/employers, university partners and other external organisations, particularly to maximise opportunities for interprofessional interactions and education including research, outreach and income generating activities. 
  15. Carry out other duties commensurate with the level of the post as outlined by the Head of School. 
  16. With regards to the nature of your role and its impact upon our students, make an active contribution to and support the improvement of the student experience. 
  17. Undertake other relevant duties and responsibilities appropriate to the grade of the post.

Salary: £50,253 to £58,225 per annum
