We are looking for a Veterinary Lecturer in Small Animal General Practice to help us train a new generation of highly skilled veterinary professionals who are passionate about Small Animal General Practice.

The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Lancashire is an international, research-active institution, the first facility of its kind to open in the county. You will be joining a talented team who are leading the way in modern learning today, committed to widening access and participation in veterinary education. The School is developing further research activities and postgraduate teaching opportunities, along with bespoke teaching and research environments. Collaboration with internal and external research networks is encouraged.

You will contribute to the course development, delivery and management of undergraduate and postgraduate education for students enrolled in the School of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on the topic of small animal general practice. You will work closely with the School of Veterinary Medicine’s academic and digital development team to create innovative and accessible learning provision to undergraduate and postgraduate learners, supervise and support undergraduate and postgraduate research, and contribute to the wider School and University activities.

The role will involve some working at Myerscough College.

The successful candidate will have sound knowledge and practical experience of veterinary and animal sciences with particular reference to Small Animal General Practice, along with experience of education, teaching and assessment at Levels 4-7.

For this role you are required to have an undergraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine, be registered with the RCVS, and have a higher education teaching qualification (e.g. PGCHE, FHEA or equivalent), or a commitment to complete within one year of appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (Essential)

  • Sound knowledge and practical experience of veterinary and animal sciences with particular reference to small animal general practice, medicine & surgery (Application/Interview). 
  • Experience of education, teaching and assessment at Levels 4-7 (Application/Interview). 
  • An undergraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine and registered with the RCVS (Application). 
  • Higher education teaching qualification (e.g. PGCHE, FHEA or equivalent), or a commitment to complete within one year of appointment (Application). 
  • Flexible, creative, and innovative approach to teaching and learning including experience of face-to-face and virtual learning environments (Application/Interview). 
  • Enthusiasm for widening participation and supporting under-represented groups into Higher education (Application/Interview).
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team (Application/ Interview).
  • Proficient in the use of IT including Microsoft Office, Padlet and quiz software (Application/Interview). 
  • Commitment to animal welfare in practice and understanding of animal ethics (Application/Interview). 
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills (Application/ Interview). 
  • Able to support an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected and able to participate, while upholding lawful freedom of speech (Interview).

  • Experience of curriculum development, constructive alignment and assessment techniques (Application/Interview). 
  • Demonstrable experience of small animal general veterinary practice activities (Application/Interview). 
  • An interest in surgery and surgical teaching (Application/Interview). 
  • Publications, conference presentations (Application). 
  • A relevant Master’s qualification or equivalent professional, specialist experience e.g. CertAVP (Application). 
  • PhD in a relevant area (Application). 
  • An ability to contribute to commercial activities and income generation (Application/Interview). 
  • An ability to contribute to the enhancement of research within the School (Application/Interview). 
  • Ability to undertake research/knowledge transfer (Application/Interview).
  1. Promote the advancement of learning and teaching, student experience and success, quality assurance and enhancement, including monitoring and evaluation of outcomes, to ensure high standards are maintained, and requirements of all relevant regulatory bodies are met.
  2. Design and develop effective and inclusive learning materials and assessments to align with programme and module descriptors. 
  3. Contribute to the School of Veterinary Medicine’s academic and research objectives through scholarly activities, knowledge transfer and research outputs.
  4. Provide academic and pastoral support to undergraduate and postgraduate students. 
  5. Teach to a high-quality standard using engaging and inclusive teaching, learning and assessment methods and technologies, including via VLE and other digital media. 
  6. Contribute to the assessment process for students including enhancement, setting, invigilation, marking and moderation of the student work, individually or collectively as part of a programme team in accordance with University and School quality assurance procedures.
  7. Provide high quality, timely, formative and summative feedback to students.
  8. Ensure that learning content is appropriate, up to date and comprehensive to enable successful achievement of agreed learning outcomes. 
  9. To contribute to the further development of the School of Veterinary Medicine course provision as well as undertaking strategic development responsibilities relating to small animal general practice veterinary education. 
  10. To undertake administrative duties relevant to module leadership (administer course registers, assessment records, learning programmes and other records) and Personal Tutoring, including supporting student retention and engagement, identifying and assisting struggling students. 
  11. To support processes to enhance the student voice and integrate student wellbeing into course delivery. 
  12. Engage with the recruitment of students onto courses and provide appropriate advice on progression and career opportunities. To participate in the student admission process: open days; recruitment; clearing; and selection events for all campus sites 
  13. Contribute to development and delivery of CPD, PPD or PG degree courses. 
  14. To develop and consolidate contacts with industry/employers, university partners, and other external organisations, particularly to maximise opportunities for interprofessional interactions and education, including research, outreach, and income-generating activities. 
  15. Carry out other duties commensurate with the level of the post as outlined by the Head of School. 
  16. With regards to the nature of your role and its impact upon our students, make an active contribution to and support the improvement of student experience. 
  17. Undertake other relevant duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post's grade.

Salary: £50,253 to £58,225 per annum
