Veterinary surgeon

Bermuda Veterinary Services (BVS Limited) is an independently owned, full-service small animal hospital based at 1 The Lane in Paget, Bermuda. 

Since opening our doors on 1 January 2015, we’ve spent more than a decade caring for the island’s pets and their owners as a true one-stop practice — combining everyday wellness and preventive care with advanced diagnostics and surgery, alongside boarding, grooming, doggy daycare, and home-visit services all under one roof. 

Our hospital is exceptionally well equipped for its size, with an in-house diagnostic laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasound, ECG, and dental imaging — and we’re proud to operate the only pet MRI in Bermuda.

Our surgical caseload is genuinely varied, spanning soft-tissue, dental, orthopaedic and oncological procedures, giving our vets real breadth of work. 

We serve a loyal, established client base, hold a strong reputation across the island, and provide an emergency on-call service outside our regular hours. 

Above all, we’re a small, friendly, supportive team committed to high-quality medicine and to looking after both our patients and our people. 

There are no referral services in Bermuda, so we see the cases through.

Small animal practice caring for a loyal client base — a four-day working week, day shifts of 9 hours, and shared out-of-hours on a fair rota.

Director and Practice Manager 

You will need: 

• A veterinary qualification recognised for registration in Bermuda (we will guide you)
• 5+ years' experience preferred, though we will consider enthusiastic newer graduates
• Strong communication

Essential

• Sound clinical judgement and autonomy — confident making independent decisions and managing cases from presentation to resolution, without referral backup.
• Broad small-animal caseload — competent across general practice medicine, including emergency and critical cases.
• Surgical capability — proficient in routine and soft-tissue surgery, with the confidence to take on a varied surgical caseload (dental, and ideally orthopaedic/oncological exposure).
• Diagnostic interpretation — able to use and interpret in-house diagnostics (radiography, ultrasound, ECG, laboratory) to drive decisions.
• Communication and client care — clear, empathetic communication with owners, building trust and long-term relationships.
• Resilience and adaptability — comfortable in a busy, self-contained practice where the team sees cases through.
• Registration eligibility — qualification recognised for veterinary registration in Bermuda.

Desirable

• Advanced surgical or specific clinical interests (orthopaedics, dentistry, diagnostic imaging).
• Experience in a sole-charge or small-team setting.
• A collaborative, mentoring attitude toward nursing and junior colleagues.
• Genuine commitment to relocating and settling — not just a short stint.

Clinical care

• Provide first-opinion consultations across a broad small-animal caseload, taking histories, examining patients, diagnosing, and developing treatment plans.
• Manage cases end-to-end — from presentation through diagnosis, treatment and follow-up — given the absence of referral services on the island.
• Assess and treat emergency and critically ill patients, including stabilisation and ongoing care.
• Prescribe and administer medications responsibly, in line with professional and regulatory standards.

Surgery and procedures

• Perform routine and soft-tissue surgery (including spays/neuters, lump removals and dentistry), and contribute to the practice's wider surgical caseload as skills allow.
• Provide appropriate anaesthesia, pain management and peri-operative care, working closely with the nursing team.

Diagnostics

• Use and interpret in-house diagnostics — digital radiography, ultrasound, ECG and laboratory results — to inform clinical decisions.
• Maintain accurate, timely and complete clinical records and medical notes. 

Client communication

• Build trusting relationships with owners, clearly explaining diagnoses, options, costs and prognoses, and supporting informed decisions.
• Handle sensitive conversations — including end-of-life care — with empathy and professionalism.

Team and standards

• Work collaboratively with veterinary and nursing colleagues, supporting and mentoring junior team members where appropriate.
• Uphold the practice's clinical standards, protocols and continuity-of-care measures (e.g. appropriate rechecks and follow-ups).
• Contribute to a positive, supportive team culture and a safe working environment.

Out-of-hours and operational

• Participate in the shared out-of-hours/on-call rota on a fair basis.
• Maintain professional registration and complete continuing professional development (CPD).
• Comply with all relevant Bermuda veterinary, controlled-drug and health-and-safety regulations.

We offer a total package of BMD $100,000–$120,000, depending on experience, including a monthly housing allowance of BMD $1,000, with any out-of-hours work paid on top. (The Bermuda dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, so your earnings hold a stable, predictable value.) 

Thanks to Bermuda's low personal taxes — total deductions of around 10%, versus roughly 28–30% in the UK — you keep far more of what you earn; we'd recommend confirming your personal position with an accountant. 

Just as importantly, the role is built around a sustainable pace: a four-day working week of 9-hour days, with out-of-hours shared fairly on a manageable rota — and in practice, plenty of on-call shifts pass without a call-out. 

Scheduled working hours each week vary between 35 and 38 hours per week, with one in every 3 weekends working on the Saturday and On Call on the Sunday. 

Nurses assist with On Call, so you are not alone while working On Call.

Out-of-hours and on-call

• A fair, shared OOH rota with reasonable frequency and nursing support for all On Calls.
• Recovery time after tending to a critical care case requiring overnight care, so a busy night doesn't bleed into an exhausting day.
• Clear boundaries — not being contacted on days off.
